Research and Teaching

The overall focus of my work
concerns the influence of geographical factors on the
sustainable planning, development, and management of tourism
in places and communities around the world. I say around the
world only to convey my interest in not just one region of
this magnificently fascinating planet and to underline that
this type of sustainable development whose focus is
community-based can and is being performed around the world. This focus
also provides direction to
my teaching, research, and service - all three of |
 |
which are linked in ways that
strengthen and compliment each other. The
basic tenet that informs my work is that the
planner, developer, and/or manager's
foundation of ideas - and, consequently, the
tourism product and/or project itself - is
enhanced when the interdependent complex yet
simplicity of values, patterns, and
activities of the community are understood
and considered. I believe it is by taking
all this into account that tourism can be
mutually beneficial to those who live in,
visit, and sustainably interact with a place
and its geography, even virtually.
My research and creative
activities revolve around the identification and examination
of the myriad linkages that exist between tourism and other
economic sectors. Community and stakeholder participation in
the sustainable planning, development, and management of
tourism and tourism policy is key.
Through my teaching, I aim to
provide educational and practical life skills (hands-on and
real life learning experiences) for students. I view my
teaching role being one of advising and facilitating
students' research, writing, and life-long learning
concerning the linkages between geography, regional
development et al., tourism and hospitality studies,
and the geographies of tourism. |

I have been involved with
CCSU's Center for International Education and , through the
planning, development and carrying out of cultural
orientations (see below) for both CCSU students studying
abroad and international students studying at CCSU, I hope
to continue to enhance and promote worldwide
cultural/geographical/tourism understanding. The ultimate
goal is to illustrate just how similar peoples of all
countries/cultures/faiths are to one another, and that this
understanding can be a catalyst for peace. Similar
cross-cultural learning
opportunities are also made available for students in class.

The regions of
the world in which I hold a particular geographic interest
and/or have already done some work to date are the French Caribbean, New England, Western
Europe, Canada,
California, West Africa, and Brazil. |
