ETHNIC ISLANDS

If you look carefully at the map on p. 149 (Figure 5.7) you will see several isolated clusters of various national and ethnic groups.  These "islands" often appear in the middle of a large ethnic group and represent some interesting and unique circumstances.  Your group activity is to investigate one of these clusters and write a report about it.  The report will have the following sections:

GROUP REPORT

The Migration Picture -

National Scale - viewed at the scale of the entire country (US), how many migrated?  Was there any particular period of intense migration to this country from the source area?  Was the migration voluntary?  What were the conditions in the originating country or region that resulted in the migration?  Basically this section is a brief history of where they came from and where they went nationally

Searching Hints:http://factfinder.census.gov   This is the entry site for the US Census and provides a gateway to all 2000 census data both nationally and for your island.

Try CONSULS and the on-line databases available through the Burritt Library web site.

Origins of The Island - specifically for this place (or places), how, why and when did this group appear here?  How big was it Was it part of the main stream of migration or a later event?  What attracted them to this place?  Generally, this section focuses on why this place was selected by this group

The "Island" Group Today - How is this group integrated with the communities they live in?  Do they maintain a distinct identity?  Is there evidence of pride in their history in this place?  Generally, this section looks at the communities how and how the distinct group mixes and participates in the larger community.  This may be the most difficult section.

Be sure to include any maps or pictures you come across in your research but cite their location so that I could find them again.
