What an .mxd File Contains
  • Pointers to data
    • Absolute and relative paths
  • Symbolization

    • Can be different from the file name of the data set
    • For map legends

What an .mxd File Does Not Contain
  • Any spatial data

You Cannot Edit the File Directly
  • Binary information (e.g. .doc for MS Word)
  • Rumour of a move to XML, which will be editable

There Are Two Views
  • Data View
    • One data frame at a time
    • For working with data
  • Layout View
    • All data frames in the map will show
    • For paper or screen map creation
    • Ancillary elements, e.g. titles, scale bars, north arrows, can be placed

There are also .mxt or template files
  • C:\documents and settings\YourName\Application Data\ESRI\ArcMap\Templates\Normal.mxt is the default map file that opens when you start up ArcMap
  • Used for repetitive mapping with similar design
  • Some templates provided
  • C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Bin\Templates
  • Some USA and World data also in C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Bin\TemplateData\TemplateData.gdb

Customizable through Toolbars and Extensions
  • Create custom toolbars
  • Download and install new tools
  • Load extensions – some free, some at great cost ($2,000)

MXD Doctor
  • Corrupt .mxd files can often be fized
  • Start>All Programs>ArcGIS/Developer Tools>MXD Doctor

You Can Move Data Layers only When the Display tab is Checked in the TOC

  • Polygons-lines-points placed in order automatically
